Learn About the Benefits of Area Rugs
Area rugs can change the feel of a space in minutes. Area rugs also look beautiful layered over carpet or adding warmth and color to hardwood, laminate, vinyl and tile. Mill Direct Carpet & Floor Covering has a large selection of area rugs to choose from. No matter your taste or preference, we can help. Look for these tips to get started:
- Color. Light-colored rugs make a room seem airy. Darker styles create an intimate feeling.
- Pattern. Create a focal point with bold colors and more active or ornate designs.
- Durability. For heavy traffic rooms, a solid, dark rug works best to disguise wear and tear.

Care and Maintenance of Area Rugs
- Regular Cleaning: Vacuuming helps rugs retain their beauty and will extend their useful life.
- Shag-Type Rugs: Protect the cable yarn when vacuuming. Long yarns tend to wrap around beater-bars, and vacuum brushes will damage the fiber. Disconnect the beater-bar to avoid damage.
- Occasional Cleaning: Professional carpet cleaning is recommended using hot water extraction method. Do not dry clean rugs or use bleach.
- Handling Spills: Clean immediately. Blot with a clean cloth, then spot clean with a solution of clear dishwashing detergent and water (1/4 tsp dishwashing detergent to 1 quart of warm water).

Choosing an Area Rug
- Design: Rug designs fall into contemporary, traditional or transitional categories. Your choice among the three will be a defining decision. Geometrics and simple patterns work well in contemporary rooms, while florals and other organics are nice in traditional spaces.
- Color: Color can make a big impact in a room. It's important to give it serious consideration when you’re rug shopping. Your new rug needs to coordinate. It can quietly or subtly complement your décor or become the basis for your entire design scheme.
- Fiber: Come in both natural and manmade fibers. Wool, silk, cotton and jute are natural fibers. Rugs of these fibers are often relatively expensive. Rugs of manmade fibers like nylon and polypropylene are usually cheaper.
